September 1: National Tofu Day (United Kingdom): -- Tofu is largely either loved or hated by people; the first group adores the wholesome superfood and extols its adaptability. Those in the second group don't comprehend the fuss, either! Tofu is supposedly tasteless. This is all mostly accurate. National Tofu Day, however, exhorts skeptics to give the dish another go. There are many reasons why, but a fantastic place to start is the abundance of health advantages. Without the fat, tofu has a lot of protein. We also concur that tofu lacks flavor on its own. But if you serve it with the ideal sauce or garnishes, you'll never go wrong. Making tofu first became popular in China during the Han era, almost 2,000 years ago. It then made its way to eastern Asia, including Japan. The rise of Buddhism and the vegetarian diet advised for practitioners may have occurred simultaneously with the popularity of tofu. Since that time, tofu has become a mainstay in East Asian kitchens. How does one make tofu? Tofu is born from curdled soy milk pressed into a solid block and cooled. Preparing tofu is similar to the production of dairy cheese, where you curdle and solidify milk. Unlike cheese making, you need to discard the whey and press the curds to form a solid. Many people nowadays, especially vegetarians, enjoy tofu. Tofu is a great source of protein, according to doctors, nutritionists, and proponents of cruelty-free living. All nine of the necessary amino acids are present. It also contains a ton of zinc, copper, vitamin B1, manganese, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. Sweet or savory, tofu lends itself beautifully to any dish. You can cook it in different ways to change its texture. It can transform from soft and silken smooth to crunchy depending on the hand that cooks it. You can grill, bake, or stir-fry tofu. The neutral (some might say bland) taste works well with multiple foods. Think of all the flavor combinations you could try out in the kitchen. We don't know why tofu gets such a bad rap. So, it's high time we change the narrative. National Tofu Day is the best day to start. If you haven't tried tofu yet, give it another go today. September 1: National Burnt Ends Day: -- Are you ready for some flavor and sauce? Then get your BBQ celebration on! Once considered trimmings or left-overs, burnt ends come from the point of a brisket. However, these days burnt ends take center stage in a BBQ basket of smoky flavor and goodness! The name comes from the longer cooking time required for tender brisket. As a result, these thinner points become a little charred and tougher than the rest of the meat. Don't let that description deter you, though. As a tradition in the Kansas City area, they've mastered burnt ends and a taste for them has spread across the country. Delicious on their own, burnt ends also taste amazing on sandwiches and in stews. They can be sweet, spicy, and of course smoky. A hint of hickory or cherry tantalizes the senses. No wonder there is an entire day to celebrate! The American Royal Association out of Kansas City founded National Burnt Ends Day in 2021 to promote Kansas City BBQ and their mouthwatering burnt ends. Established in 1899, the organization promotes agricultural learning through competition, scholarships, education, and agricultural events. The World Series of Barbecue is the organization's largest fundraiser. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/tv-commercials-the-classics-vol-1-dv1.html

September 1: Ginger Cat Appreciation Day: -- It sure smells like catnip in here! That's because today we come together to celebrate the gingers of the feline world. Super clingy, often misunderstood, and always ready to take a petting, these orange furballs are supercelebrities of the cats. The day also calls for establishing a connection with the stray animals and encourages people to provide them with food and shelter. So take this blessed day to pet a stray, stream "Garfield," and appreciate the gingers in your life. Oftentimes the turn we are least expectant to take ends up changing our lives. Such is the story of Chris Roy, a software developer turned animal rights activist. In 1997, Roy found a stray cat near his home. Out of pity, he carried the stray home and decided to foster him for a while. Little did he know how that runt of the litter would change the purpose of his life. Within weeks, Roy formed a special bond with the feline and gave him a permanent place in his house. The 14-pound tabby filled Roy's day with warmth and belonging. Doobert, the name he gave to his ginger, lived for 17 years. In 2014, Doobert's death rocked the shores of Roy's life and sucked him into deep corners of uncharted grief. Grappling with the loss of his beloved ginger, Roy dedicated the arrival of September 1 as Ginger Cat Appreciation Day. He also launched Doobert, an online app that connects rescue homes and animal shelters with volunteers throughout the world. Since 2014, Doobert has worked with over 1,200 organizations across North America and built a volunteer base of 27,000+ pet lovers and enthusiasts. By dedicating the day in memory of his cat, Roy aims to raise awareness about the divine duty of humans to look after our furry friends. With the annual celebration of Ginger Cat Appreciation Day, we pledge to carry the loving spirit of Doobert with us and spread the message of animal welfare across the globe. Reach out to your local shelters, feed the strays of your community, and raise a toast to the amazing companionship that our pets provide us. September 1: Pink Cadillac Day: -- Honors the iconic pink car that became a cultural landmark of the 1950s. Many thanks to its early supporters such as Elvis Presley and later Bruce Springsteen, the car went from a shoddy black and white convertible to the global symbol of luxury and pizzaz. It was on this day in 1957 that Presley performed in front of 6000 people at the Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma, Washington. He immortalized himself as the King Of Rock And Roll. On September 1, we paint the town pink and celebrate our weirdest impulses. Pink Cadillac Day is a joyous annual celebration of pink Cadillac cars, referred to affectionately as 'caddy' by their proud owners. The car came into prominence in the late naughts of the 1950s when the American gaze was beholden by leotards, shiny belts, sideburns, and the luring dances of emerging cultural icons such as Johnny Ace, Marilyn Monroe, and our beloved Elvis Presley. Pink Cadillac Day is the ultimate ode to the enduring influence of the 1950s American automobile culture. The post-war boom, reflected in almost all aspects of life, showed a major transgression in the cars we drive. It was not until the 1950s that owning a car became a possibility for millions of middle-class Americans. By amping up the utility of vehicles, both as a necessity of life and a status symbol, pop culture played an instrumental (pun intended!) role in realizing the American dream of owning an automobile. Although the original Cadillac Fleetwood did not debut until 1976, Presley led the revolution of this longstanding cultural icon by having his neighbor paint his black four-door sedan pink in 1955. Creating a generational sensation from scratch was just something Presley did in his lunchtime. Today, caddy counts as a vintage attraction, with buyers across the world lining up for select sales and auctions. As we continue to research the exact year of origin of this holiday, let us take September 1 to suspend our preconceived notions about living in a black and white world and splash it with our favorite colors. September 1: National Forgiveness Day: -- A day to embrace healing, understanding, and unity by encouraging forgiveness and fostering empathy. National Forgiveness Day traces its roots back to the universal human need for healing and forgiveness. We are using today's National Day to remind people about the transformative power of forgiveness. It's time to let go of grudges and embrace a path of unity and understanding. Forgiveness isn't about condoning hurtful actions. Forgiveness is about promoting empathy and connectedness to create a more compassionate society. It's about a liberating choice that unburdens us from feelings of resentment. Withholding forgiveness can be debilitating. In fact, not forgiving people prevents people who hurt from healing and moving forward in their lives. By forgiving others, we contribute to healthier relationship by improving our mental health and emotional well-being. Studies have shown that forgiveness can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and even enhance the immune system. In fact, forgiveness can also increase mental resilience because it releases negative emotions that disrupt mental health. When people experience forgiveness, they are more likely to engage in acts of kindness toward others. Practicing forgiveness leads to changes in brain activity and contributes to an overall sense of well-being. The concept of forgiveness has been a part of human culture for centuries. Ancient philosophies and religious teachings from various cultures have emphasized the importance of letting go of resentment and embracing forgiveness for inner peace. Finding forgiveness does not mean you condone the behavior inflicted towards you. It doesn't mean you have to have a relationship with the person, either. The process of forgiveness is to benefit you and your well-being. Just like learning a musical instrument or a sport, forgiveness is a skill that can be developed and refined over time. Unfortunately, many people struggle with learning to forgive. It's important to remember forgiveness involves understanding, empathy, and a willingness to move beyond negative feelings. Begin with practicing self-compassion and self-forgiveness. If blaming yourself is getting in the way of forgiving, acknowledge your pain and accept you have the ability to make peace with it. You don't have to make amends with the person who hurt you to forgive. September 1: World Letter Writing Day: -- Now is the time to pick up a pen and pour out your feelings on a piece of paper. Yes, writing something down may seem like a peculiar idea in this day and age, but it will definitely be one of the most interesting things you have done in a long time. The letter can be a love letter, one filled with anger, or even one simply written to create memories. All you have to do is write it, and hand it over to the one it is addressed to. So grab your pen and get started! The day was founded by Australian author, artist, and photographer Richard Simpkin, who adores writing handwritten letters. It all started when he began writing to individuals he considered as Australian Legends, and also received their responses! In 2005, his experience in writing letters to legends made it possible for him to publish the book "Australian Legends." In the book, he paid a tribute to the art of writing letters and looked back at how it changed everything for him. To further honor handwritten letters, he created the World Letter Writing Day in 2014. He also holds letter-writing workshops in schools to promote the art. Letter writing itself has existed for centuries and was present in ancient Egypt and Greece times. At that point though, letters were written on materials such as metal, lead, wax-coated wooden tablets, pottery fragments, animal skin, and papyrus. Earlier in the 17th and 18th centuries, letters were merely used to send information, specific news, information, or greetings. Others used letters to exchange ideas and formulate critical thinking regarding particular subjects. This is why several letters gathered from the past serve as an archive of personal and diplomatic interactions for historians. They are even used to determine how many events in history played out. From thereon, letters became an art form and stood out as a genre of literature. Things changed a great deal when postal services were created and people started using letters for personal interaction. In fact, during times of war, letters were the only way families and lovers could stay in touch. September 1: National Acne Positivity Day: -- Acne is a skin phenomenon that occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog your hair follicles. It creates pimples, whiteheads, as well as blackheads. While it is the most common among teenagers, people of all ages can be affected. As common as it is, acne can be a prominent source of insecurity for many people, affecting other aspects of their lives, such as social and personal aspects. National Acne Positivity Day aims to end this by encouraging self-love, acceptance, and appreciation of this natural skin phenomenon and ourselves. It is believed that the origin of acne goes back to antiquity. The earliest mentions of the condition come from historical records stating that Pharaohs had acne. In addition, there is evidence that the use of sulfur as a topical acne treatment dates back to Cleopatra's reign. Francois Boissier de Sauvages de Lacroix, a French physician, and botanist, published one of the first descriptions of acne in the 16th century. He coined the name "psydracia achne" to characterize small, red, and firm tubercles that changed the look of a person's face during adolescence but were neither itchy nor bothersome. When Joseph Plenck, an Austrian physician, wrote a book in 1776 proposing the unique notion of classifying skin illnesses by their fundamental lesions. The recognition and classification of acne advanced further. Acne has a high financial and social cost. Acne accounts for more than five million doctor visits in the United States each year. Acne is also responsible for 3.5 million doctor visits in the United Kingdom each year. In 2015, the top 10 leading acne treatment brands in the United States made nearly $352 million in sales. Acne's causal and inflammatory elements are frequently misunderstood, and people blame acne sufferers for their disease. The victim's self-esteem can be harmed as a result of such blame in addition to the existing physical effects of acne. The stigma was worsened back in the day by dermatology's link of acne with sexually transmitted illnesses, particularly syphilis. Acne affects more than just a person's appearance. Acne can negatively impact one's emotional well-being. Researchers have discovered that patients with acne can experience depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, poor self-image, decreased quality of life, and a sense of being alone. National Acne Positivity Day brings to light the commonality of this skin condition. It aims to empower those with it by enabling them to love and accept themselves the way they are. September 1: Emma M. Nutt Day: -- You may wonder, "Who is Emma Nutt?" She altered norms in a field where men predominated as the first telephone operator in history. Some of us still recall the time when telephone operators were around (even at the risk of sounding ancient.) The first thing that springs to mind when you think of a telephone operator is the sound of a woman's nice, welcoming voice. However, there once was a time when telephone operators were young men. As you can understand, this situation could not continue. The world's first female phone operator, Emma Nutt, opened doors for future generations of women, and that is where her narrative begins. The original phones were difficult to operate, a far cry from the modern, svelte mobile phones. As if that weren't bad enough, telephone companies employed young men who weren't particularly skilled at interacting with others to handle the switchboards. When calling the exchange, customers were never sure what to expect. The boys had a penchant for having abrasive chats and were nasty and impatient. They made jokes because, well, that's what lads do, you know. They occasionally even cursed at the clients. Alexander Graham Bell came up with the idea of replacing the boys with young women - naturally predisposed to being 'polite.' Bell hired a woman named Emma Nutt away from her job at the telegraph office. Her first day of work was September 1, 1878, and Nutt officially became the world's first telephone operator. Hours later, her sister joined the same place and became the second. Emma Nutt was a legend at her workplace. Reports say she remembered every number in the New England Telephone Directory Company. She was patient and cultured. Her soothing voice elevated customer service to heights previously unseen. By the 1880s, most telephone operators in the U.S. were women. Despite making history, things weren't peachy for female telephone operators. Nutt worked a 54-hour week for $10 a month. The lunch break was an hour each day. Women had to be unmarried and between 17 and 26 years old to get jobs as operators. There was a string of height, weight, and arm-length criteria. Passing height requirements were mandatory. The companies needed women tall enough to reach the tops of switchboards. The rules also stated that women of color couldn't get jobs as operators. In the years that followed, discriminatory work practices would trigger waves of activism for equal rights. The women working at the telephone companies were the heart of resistance and social change. Today, September 1, 2026

September 1, 1907: #BOTD: #HBD! Walter Reuther, American union leader, civil rights activist, environmentalist, founder of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who built it into one of the most progressive labor unions in American history, co-founder of the AFL-CIO, NAACP board member (d. May 9, 1970) is #born Walter Philip Reuther in Wheeling, West Virginia to German-American parents. Walter Reuthersaw labor movements not as narrow special interest groups but as instruments to advance social justice and human rights in democratic societies. He leveraged the UAW's resources and influence to advocate for workers' rights, civil rights, women's rights, universal health care, public education, affordable housing, environmental stewardship and nuclear nonproliferation around the world. He believed in Swedish-style social democracy and societal change through nonviolent civil disobedience. He cofounded the AFL-CIO in 1955 with George Meany. He survived two attempted assassinations, including one at home where he was struck by a 12-gauge shotgun blast fired through his kitchen window, and there is evidence that his death in a plane crash was caused by the sabotage of the plane's altimeter. He was the fourth and longest serving president of the UAW, serving from 1946 until his death in 1970. As the leader of five million autoworkers including retirees and their families, Reuther was influential inside the Democratic Party. Following the Bay Of Pigs in 1961, JFK sent Reuther to Cuba to negotiate a prisoner exchange with Fidel Castro. He was instrumental in spearheading the creation of the Peace Corps and in marshaling support for the Civil Rights Act Of 1964, the Voting Rights Act Of 1965, Medicare and Medicaid, and the Fair Housing Act. He met weekly in 1964 and 1965 with President Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House to discuss policies and legislation for the Great Society and War On Poverty. The Republican Party was wary of Reuther, leading presidential candidate Richard Nixon to say about John F. Kennedy during the 1960 election, "I can think of nothing so detrimental to this nation than for any President to owe his election to, and therefore be a captive of, a political boss like Walter Reuther." Conservative politician Barry Goldwater declared that "[Reuther] was more dangerous to our country than Sputnik or anything Soviet Russia might do." A powerful ally of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement, Reuther marched with King in Detroit (Detroit Walk To Freedom), Selma (Selma To Montgomery Marches), Birmingham (The Birmingham Campaign), Montgomery (Selma To Montgomery Marches), and Jackson (The March Against Fear). When King and others including children were jailed in Birmingham, Alabama, and King authored his famous Letter From Birmingham Jail, Reuther arranged 160K USD for the protestors' release. He also helped organize and finance the March On Washington on August 28, 1963, delivering remarks from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial shortly before King gave his historic "I Have a Dream" speech on the National Mall. An early supporter of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers, he asked Robert F. Kennedy to visit and support Chavez. He served on the board of directors for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was one of the founders of Americans For Democratic Action, a liberal American political organization advocating progressive policies. A lifetime environmentalist, Reuther played a critical role in funding and organizing the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. According to Denis Hayes, the principal national organizer of the first Earth Day, "Without the UAW, the first Earth Day would have likely flopped!" Walter Reauther died aged 62 in what was likely an assassination attempt along with his wife May, architect Oscar Stonorov, Reuther's bodyguard William Wolfman, pilot George O. Evans and co-pilot Joseph U. Karaffa when their chartered Learjet 23 crashed in flames at 9:33 p.m. Eastern Time in Pellston, Michigan. Journalist Michael Parenti wrote, "Reuther's demise appears as part of a truncation of liberal and radical leadership that included the deaths of four national figures: President John Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and Senator Robert Kennedy." The plane, arriving from Detroit in rain and fog, was on final approach to Pellston Regional Airport in Pellston, Michigan, near the UAW's recreational and educational facility at Black Lake, Michigan. The National Transportation Safety Board discovered that the plane's altimeter was missing parts, some incorrect parts were installed, and one of its parts had been installed upside down, which in light of two earlier attempted assassinations and a similar near-crash in a small plane in 1969 makes it likely that Reuther may have been murdered a very messy manner, given the many innocent collateral deaths. Reuther's funeral was held on May 15, 1970, at Ford Auditorium in Detroit, Michigan. An estimated 3,400 people were in attendance. Among others, Coretta Scott King eulogized: "Walter Reuther was to black people, the most widely known and respected white labor leader in the nation. He was there when the storm clouds were thick. We remember him in Montgomery. He was in Birmingham. He marched with us in Selma, and Jackson, Mississippi, and in Washington. ... Only yesterday, there he was again in Charleston, South Carolina, the leader of a million and a half workers giving personal support to a strike of only 400 black women. ... He was a big man, so of course he had enemies and detractors. He had the courage to be with the minority when it was right. He was a simple man in his personal life, a rare quality in these flamboyant times ... but if his ways were simple, his ideas were grand. He aroused the imagination of millions. ... He was fighting the fight of the whole world." Walter and May Reuther's ashes were spread in a simple ceremony on the hilltop overlooking the Main Lobby area of United Auto Workers Local 1268, 1100 West Chrysler Drive, Belvidere, Illinois. September 1, 1870: The Unification Of Germany (German: Deutsche Einigung): The Franco-Prussian War (The Franco-German War, The War Of 1870): The Battle Of Sedan: -- Fighting breaks out in the French communes of Beaumont-en-Argonne and Sedan, Ardennes, beginning The Battle Of Sedan. By the second and final day, the Battle of Sedan results in a decisive Prussian victory, with the Prussian Fourth and Third Armies capturing 104,000 French soldiers along with 558 guns of the 130,000 strong Army of Chalons, its commander Marshal Patrice de MacMahon, and the Emperor Napoleon III, effectively dissolving the Army of Chalons and deciding the war in favour of Prussia and its allies (though fighting continued under a new French government). The Army of Chalons, formed in the French city of Chalons (Chalons-sur-Marne, modern Chalons-en-Champagne) on August 17, 1870 from elements of the Army of the Rhine (1870) (French: Armee du Rhin (1870)), was attempting to lift the Siege Of Metz, only to be caught by the Prussian Fourth Army and defeated at the Battle of Beaumont on August 30. The Prussian Fourth and Third Armies, commanded by Generalfeldmarschall Helmuth von Moltke and accompanied by Prussian King Wilhelm I and Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, encircled MacMahon's army at Sedan in a gigantic battle of annihilation. Marshal MacMahon was wounded during the attacks, and command passed to General Auguste-Alexandre Ducrot, until it was taken over by General Emmanuel Felix de Wimpffen. Pulverized from all sides by superior German artillery firepower and with all breakout attempts defeated, the French Army of Chalons capitulated on September 2. While Napoleon III was taken prisoner, the French government in Paris continued the war and proclaimed a Government of National Defense on September 4. The German armies accordingly besieged Paris on September 19. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/the-western-tradition-dvd-set-all-52-shows-13-d5213.html

September 1, 1939: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Invasion Of Poland (The September Campaign, The Polish Campaign, The War Of Poland Of 1939, The Polish Defensive War Of 1939): False Flag Attacks: Operation Himmler (Operation Konserve): The Gleiwitz Incident (German: Uberfall Auf Den Sender Gleiwitz; Polish: Prowokacja Gliwicka) (The Gleiwitz Transmitter False Flag Attack [The Sender Gleiwitz False Flag Attack]): The Battle Of Westerplatte: -- World War II in Europe begins -- immediately following the successes of Operation Himmler (the Nazi German false flag attacks along the German-Polish border, especially on German radio station Sender Gleiwitz in Gleiwitz, Germany [The Gleiwitz Incident, in today's Gliwice, Poland]) the night before -- with The Battle Of Westerplatte, when at between 4:45 and 4:48 a.m. the German battleship SMS Schleswig-Holstein fires point-blank at the Polish Military Transit Depot (Polish: Wojskowa Skladnica Tranzytowa, or WST) on the Westerplatte peninsula in the harbor of the Free City of Danzig with the support of the German army and Danzig police; at 5.30 a.m., Nazi Germany and Slovakia invade Poland after a lengthy period of preparations. The pretext for the invasion, the supposed attack on the Gleiwitz radio station, was staged by the German secret police, and devised by Reinhard Heydrich under orders from Hitler, to serve as a pretext for the invasion Poland. The Invasion Of Poland, known in Poland as the September Campaign (Kampania wrzesniowa) or the 1939 Defensive War (Wojna obronna 1939 roku), and in Germany as the Poland Campaign (Polenfeldzug) or Fall Weiss ("Case White"), was a joint Invasion Of Poland by Germany, the Soviet Union, the Free City of Danzig, and a small Slovak contingent that marked the beginning of World War II. The German invasion began on September 1, 1939, one week after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, while the Soviet invasion commenced on September 17 following the Molotov-Togo agreement that terminated the Soviet and Japanese hostilities in the east on September 16. The campaign ended on 6 October with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of Poland under the terms of the German-Soviet Frontier Treaty. German forces invaded Poland from the north, south, and west the morning after the Gleiwitz incident. Slovak forces advanced alongside the Germans in northern Slovakia. As the Wehrmacht advanced, Polish forces withdrew from their forward bases of operation close to the Polish-German border to more established lines of defence to the east. After the mid-September Polish defeat in the Battle of the Bzura, the Germans gained an undisputed advantage. Polish forces then withdrew to the southeast where they prepared for a long defence of the Romanian Bridgehead and awaited expected support and relief from France and the United Kingdom. While those two countries had pacts with Poland and had declared war on Germany on 3 September, in the end their aid to Poland was very limited. The Soviet Red Army's invasion of Eastern Poland on 17 September, in accordance with a secret protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, rendered the Polish plan of defence obsolete. Facing a second front, the Polish government concluded the defence of the Romanian Bridgehead was no longer feasible and ordered an emergency evacuation of all troops to neutral Romania. On October 6, following the Polish defeat at the Battle Of Kock, German and Soviet forces gained full control over Poland. The success of the invasion marked the end of the Second Polish Republic, though Poland never formally surrendered. On 8 October, after an initial period of military administration, Germany directly annexed western Poland and the former Free City of Danzig and placed the remaining block of territory under the administration of the newly established General Government. The Soviet Union incorporated its newly acquired areas into its constituent Belarusian and Ukrainian republics, and immediately started a campaign of Sovietization. In the aftermath of the invasion, a collective of underground resistance organizations formed the Polish Underground State within the territory of the former Polish state. Many of the military exiles that managed to escape Poland subsequently joined the Polish Armed Forces in the West, an armed force loyal to the Polish government-in-exile. Operation Himmler was a series of special operations undertaken by the Schutzstaffel (SS) to serve Nazi German propaganda at the outbreak of war. They were intended to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany in order to justify the subsequent Invasion Of Poland. During Hitler's declaration of war, he did not mention Gleiwitz incident by name, but grouped all provocations staged by the SS as an alleged Polish assault on Germany. The evidence for the Gleiwitz attack having been a false flag operation by the SS was provided by the German SS officer, Alfred Naujocks in 1945. September 1, 1939: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): Nazi Germany (The German Reich, The Third Reich): Nazi Eugenics ("Racial Hygiene"): Aktion T4 (German: "Action T4"): -- Adolf Hitler, on the same day he invaded Poland and began the European phase of World War II, signs an order to begin Nazi Germany's systematic Aktion T4 euthanasia program of the mentally ill and the handicapped. On August 24, 1941, Adolf Hitler orders the cessation of the program due to protests, although killings continue for the remainder of the war. Aktion T4 is a postwar name for mass murder through involuntary euthanasia in Nazi Germany. The name T4 is an abbreviation of Tiergartenstrasse 4, a street address of the Chancellery department set up in the spring of 1940, in the Berlin borough of Tiergarten, which recruited and paid personnel associated with T4. Certain German physicians were authorized to select patients "deemed incurably sick, after most critical medical examination" and then administer to them a "mercy death" (Gnadentod). In October 1939 Adolf Hitler signed a "euthanasia note" backdated to 1 September 1939, that authorized his physician Karl Brandt and Reichsleiter Philipp Bouhler to implement the programme. The killings took place from September 1939 until the end of the war in 1945, during which 275,000 to 300,000 people were killed at various extermination centres at psychiatric hospitals in Germany and Austria, along with those in occupied Poland and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now the Czech Republic). The number of victims was originally recorded as 70,273 people but this number has been increased by the discovery of victims listed in the archives of former East Germany. About half of those killed were taken from church-run asylums, often with the approval of the Protestant or Catholic authorities of the institutions. Despite the Holy See announcing on 2 December 1940 that the policy was contrary to the natural and positive Divine law and that "The direct killing of an innocent person because of mental or physical defects is not allowed", the declaration was not upheld by some Catholic authorities in Germany. In the summer of 1941, protests were led in Germany by Bishop von Galen, whose intervention, according to Richard J. Evans, led to "the strongest, most explicit and most widespread protest movement against any policy since the beginning of the Third Reich". Several reasons for the programme have been offered, including eugenics, compassion, reducing suffering, racial hygiene, economy and pressure on the welfare budget. After the nominal end of the programme, physicians in German and Austrian facilities continued many of the practices of Aktion T4, until the defeat of Germany in 1945. The unofficial continuation of the policy led to additional deaths by medicine and similar means, resulting in 93,521 beds "emptied" by the end of 1941. Technology that was developed under Aktion T4, particularly the use of lethal gas to kill large numbers of people, was taken over by the medical division of the Reich Interior Ministry, along with personnel who had participated in the development of the technology and later participated in Operation Reinhard. The technology, personnel and techniques developed were instrumental in the implementation of Nazi genocides. Although the programme was authorized by Hitler, the killings have since come to be viewed as murders in Germany. The number killed was about 200,000 in Germany and Austria, while in other European countries about 100,000 persons were also victims. September 1, 1939: World War II: The Home Front During World War II: The United Kingdom Home Front During World War II: Evacuations During World War II: Evacuations Of Civilians In Britain During World War II (Operation Pied Piper): -- Operation Pied Piper, the codename for The Evacuation Of Civilians In Britain During The Second World War, begins in order to defend individuals, especially children, from the risks associated with aerial bombing of cities by moving them to areas thought to be less at risk. The effort began on September 1, 1939 and officially relocated 1.5 million people. There were further waves of official evacuation and re-evacuation from the south and east coasts in June 1940, when a seaborne invasion was expected, and from affected cities after the Blitz began in September 1940. Official evacuations also took place from the UK to other parts of the British Empire, and many non-official evacuations within and from the UK. Other mass movements of civilians included British citizens arriving from the Channel Islands, and displaced people arriving from continental Europe. The Children's Overseas Reception Board (CORB) approved 24,000 children for evacuation overseas. Between March and September 1940, 1,532 children were evacuated to Canada, mainly through the Pier 21 immigration terminal; 577 to Australia; 353 to South Africa and 202 to New Zealand. The scheme was cancelled after the City of Benares was torpedoed on 17 September 1940, killing 77 of the 90 CORB children aboard. However, in 1940 and 1941 about 14,000 children were evacuated privately to overseas relatives or foster families, including 6,000 to Canada and 5,000 to the United States. The BBC cooperated with radio networks in the host countries, to make Children Calling Home, a programme which enabled the evacuated children and their parents to talk to each other, live on air. September ?, 1965: #BOTD: #HBD! Washoe, female common chimpanzee who was the first non-human to learn to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL) as part of a research experiment on animal language acquisition (d. October 30, 2007) is #born in West Africa in 1965. She was captured for use by the US Air Force for research for the US space program. Washoe was named after Washoe County, Nevada, where she was raised and taught to use ASL. In 1967, Allen Gardner and Beatrix Gardner established a project to teach Washoe ASL at the University of Nevada, Reno. At the time, previous attempts to teach chimpanzees to imitate vocal languages (the Gua and Viki projects) had failed. The Gardners believed that these projects were flawed because chimps are physically unable to produce the voiced sounds required for oral language. Their solution was to utilize the chimpanzee's ability to create diverse body gestures, which is how they communicate in the wild, by starting a language project based on American Sign Language. The Gardners raised Washoe as one would raise a child. She frequently wore clothes and sat with them at the dinner table. Washoe had her own 8-foot-by-24-foot trailer complete with living and cooking areas. The trailer had a couch, drawers, a refrigerator, and a bed with sheets and blankets. She had access to clothing, combs, toys, books, and a toothbrush. Much like a human child, she underwent a regular routine with chores, outdoor play, and rides in the family car. Upon seeing a swan, Washoe signed "water" and "bird". Harvard psychologist Roger Brown said that "was like getting an S.O.S. from outer space". When Washoe was five, the Gardners decided to move on to other projects, and she was moved to the University of Oklahoma's Institute of Primate Studies in Norman, Oklahoma, under the care of Roger Fouts and Deborah Fouts. Washoe was raised in an environment as close as possible to that of a human child, in an attempt to satisfy her psychological need for companionship. While with Washoe, the Gardners and Foutses were careful to communicate only in ASL with Washoe, rather than using vocal communication, on the assumption that this would create a less confusing learning environment for Washoe. This technique was said to resemble that used when teaching human children language. After the first couple of years of the language project, the Gardners and Roger Fouts discovered that Washoe could pick up ASL gestures without direct instruction, but instead by observing humans around her who were signing amongst themselves. For example, the scientists signed "toothbrush" to each other while they brushed their teeth near her. At the time of observation, Washoe showed no signs of having learned the sign, but on a later occasion she reacted to the sight of a toothbrush by spontaneously producing the correct sign, thereby showing that she had in fact previously learned the ASL sign. Moreover, the Gardners began to realize that rewarding particular signs with food and tickles was actually interfering with the intended result of conversational sign language. They changed their strategy so that food and meal times were never juxtaposed with instruction times. In addition, they stopped the tickle rewards during instruction because these generally resulted in laughing breakdowns. Instead, they set up a conversational environment that evoked communication, without the use of rewards for specific actions. For researchers to consider that Washoe had learned a sign, she had to use it spontaneously and appropriately for 14 consecutive days. These signs were then further tested using a double-blind vocabulary test. This test demonstrated 1) "that the chimpanzee subjects could communicate information under conditions in which the only source of information available to a human observer was the signing of the chimpanzee;" 2) "that independent observers agreed with each other;" and 3) "that the chimpanzees used the signs to refer to natural language categories-that the sign DOG could refer to any dog, FLOWER to any flower, SHOE to any shoe." Washoe and her mates were able to combine the hundreds of signs that they learned into novel combinations (that they had never been taught, but rather created themselves) with different meanings. For instance, when Washoe's mate Moja didn't know the word for "thermos", Moja referred to it as a "METAL CUP DRINK"; however, whether or not Washoe's combinations constitute genuine inventive language is controversial, as Herbert S. Terrace contended by concluding that seeming sign combinations did not stand for a single item, but rather were three individual signs. Taking the thermos example, rather than METAL CUP DRINK being a composite meaning thermos, it could be that Washoe was indicating there was an item of metal (METAL), one shaped like a cup (CUP), and that could be drunk out of (DRINK). One of Washoe's caretakers was pregnant and missed work for many weeks after she miscarried. Roger Fouts recounts the following situation: People who should be there for her and aren't are often given the cold shoulder-her way of informing them that she's miffed at them. Washoe greeted Kat [the caretaker] in just this way when she finally returned to work with the chimps. Kat made her apologies to Washoe, then decided to tell her the truth, signing "MY BABY DIED". Washoe stared at her, then looked down. She finally peered into Kat's eyes again and carefully signed "CRY", touching her cheek and drawing her finger down the path a tear would make on a human (Chimpanzees don't shed tears). Kat later remarked that one sign told her more about Washoe and her mental capabilities than all her longer, grammatically perfect sentences. Washoe herself lost two children: one baby died shortly after birth of a heart defect, the other baby, Sequoyah, died of a staph infection at two months of age. When Washoe was shown an image of herself in the mirror, and asked what she was seeing, she replied: "Me, Washoe". Primate expert Jane Goodall, who has studied and lived with chimpanzees for decades, believes that this might indicate some level of self-awareness. Washoe appeared to experience an identity crisis when she was first introduced to other chimpanzees, seeming shocked to learn that she was not human. She gradually came to enjoy associating with other chimps. Washoe enjoyed playing pretend with her dolls, which she would bathe and talk to and would act out imaginary scenarios. She also spent time brushing her teeth, painting and taking tea parties. When new students came to work with Washoe, she would slow down her rate of signing for novice speakers of sign language, which had a humbling effect on many of them. It generally appears that Washoe could express anything she was thinking, i.e. cognition rather than language seemed to be the limiting factor. Washoe was moved to Central Washington University in 1980. On October 30, 2007, officials from the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute on the CWU campus announced that she had died at the age of 42. Her burial details are not publicly disclosed. #Washoe #WashoeChimpanzee #AmericanSignLanguage #ASL #AnimalTesting #AnimalExperimentation #AnimalResearch #USAF #SpacePrograms #USSpacePrograms #CentralWashingtonUniversity #CWU #Chimpanzees #SignLanguage #AnimalLanguage #AllenGardner #BeatrixGardner #BeatrixTugendhutGardner #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/great-moments-from-nova-dvd-1990-tv-series-be1990.html

September 1, 1985: Watercraft: Merchant Ships (Merchant Vessels, Trading Vessels, Merchantmen): Passenger Ships: Ocean Liners: RMS Titanic: The wreck Of The RMS Titanic: The Salvaging Of The RMS Titanic: -- A joint Franco-American expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) and Robert Ballard of WHOI (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) succeed in locating the wreckage of the RMS Titanic more than 70 years after its disastrous sinking. The wreck has been the focus of intense interest since its discovery and has been visited by numerous expeditions, including salvage operations which have controversially recovered thousands of items which have been conserved and put on public display. Over the years after her sinking, many impractical, expensive and often physically impossible schemes have been put forward to raise Titanic from her resting place. They have included ideas such as filling the wreck with ping-pong balls, injecting it with 180,000 tons of Vaseline, or using half a million tons of liquid nitrogen to encase it inside a giant iceberg that would float back to the surface. However, the wreck is far too fragile to be raised and is now protected by a UNESCO convention. RMS Titanic sank in the early morning of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days into the ship's maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The largest passenger liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at around 23:40 (ship's time) on Sunday, 14 April 1912. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (ship's time; 05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, which made it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft that was operated by the United States Air Force. It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by Lockheed and its Skunk Works division. American aerospace engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. During aerial reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outfly the missile. The SR-71 was one of the first aircraft to be designed with a reduced radar cross-section. The SR-71 served with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents, but none were lost to enemy action. The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including "Blackbird" and "Habu". Since 1976, it has held the world record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, a record previously held by the related Lockheed YF-12. The Boeing 747 reportedly strayed 100 miles off course over secret Soviet Russian military installations on the Kamchatka Peninsula and Sakhalin Island. It crashed in the Sea of Japan. Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (also known as KAL007 and KE007) was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. On 1 September 1983, the South Korean airliner serving the flight was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor. The Boeing 747 airliner was en route from Anchorage to Seoul, but deviated from its original planned route and flew through Soviet prohibited airspace about the time of a U.S. aerial reconnaissance mission. The Soviet Air Forces treated the unidentified aircraft as an intruding U.S. spy plane, and proceeded to destroy it with air-to-air missiles, after firing warning shots which were likely not seen by the KAL pilots. The Korean airliner eventually crashed in the sea near Moneron Island west of Sakhalin in the Sea of Japan. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed, including Lawrence Patton McDonald, cousin of General George S. Patton, a Representative from Georgia in the United States House Of Representatives, and the second president of the John Birch Society, a self-described conservative advocacy group supporting anti-communism and limited government that has been described as a radical right and far-right organization. McDonald's radical right anti-communist credentials gave rise to a number of conspiracy theories regarding the airliner shoot-down; the subject of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 Alternative Theories concerns the various and ongoing controversy and theories put forward regarding the shooting down of plane. Many of these are based on the suppression of evidence such as the flight data recorders, unexplained details such as the role of a USAF RC-135 surveillance aircraft nearby the shoot-down, or merely Cold War disinformation and propaganda. The Soviets found the wreckage under the sea on September 15, and found the flight recorders in October, but this information was kept secret until 1993. The Soviet Union initially denied knowledge of the incident, but later admitted shooting down the aircraft, claiming that it was on a MASINT spy mission. The Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union said it was a deliberate provocation by the United States to probe the Soviet Union's military preparedness, or even to provoke a war. The White House accused the Soviet Union of obstructing search and rescue operations. The Soviet Armed Forces suppressed evidence sought by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) investigation, such as the flight recorders, which were released eight years later, after the Dissolution Of The Soviet Union. The incident was one of the most tense moments of the Cold War and resulted in an escalation of anti-Soviet sentiment, particularly in the United States. As a result of the incident, the United States altered tracking procedures for aircraft departing from Alaska. The interface of the autopilot used on airliners was redesigned to make it more ergonomic. In addition, the incident was one of the most important events that prompted the Reagan administration to allow worldwide access to the United States Global Positioning System (GPS). The Iron Cross is a former military decoration in the Kingdom of Prussia, and later in the German Empire (1871-1918) and Nazi Germany (1933-1945). It was established by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia in March 1813 backdated to the birthday of his late wife Queen Louise on 10 March 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars (EK 1813). Louise was the first person to receive this decoration (posthumous). The recommissioned Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (EK 1870), World War I (EK 1914), and World War II (EK 1939, re-introduced with a swastika added in the center). The Iron Cross was normally a military decoration only, though there were instances of it being awarded to civilians for performing military functions. Two examples of this were civilian test pilots Hanna Reitsch who was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and 1st Class and Melitta Schenk Graefin von Stauffenberg, who was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class, for their actions as pilots during World War II. The design of the cross symbol was black with a white or silver outline, was ultimately derived from the cross pattee of the Teutonic Order, used by knights on occasions from the 13th century. The Prussian Army black cross pattee was also used as the symbol of the succeeding German Army from 1871 to March/April 1918, when it was replaced by the Balkenkreuz. In 1956, it was re-introduced as the symbol of the Bundeswehr, the modern German armed forces. September 1, 1904: #BOTD: Karl Ernst, SA Gruppenfuhrer who from March 1933 on was the SA Commander in Berlin, who prior to joining the Nazi Party had been a hotel bellhop and a bouncer at gay nightclubs, alleged to have started the Reichstag Fire, one of the chief participants in the extrajudicial execution of Red Front Fighter Albrecht Hohler and who was himself extrajudicially executed in the Night of the Long Knives by firing squad six weeks after Hitler served as best man at his wedding, either because he knew too much about the Reichstag Fire, or because he was a "Pink Nazi" (a closet homosexual), or both (d. June 30, 1934) is #born in Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, the son of a cavalryman. It has been suggested that it was he who, with a small party of stormtroopers, passed through a passage from the Palace of the President of the Reichstag, and set the Reichstag building on fire on the night of February 27, 1933, rather than Marinus van der Lubbe, the young Dutch communist who convicted and executed for setting the fire. There is evidence indirectly to substantiate this: Gisevius at Nuremberg implicated Goebbels in planning the fire, Rudolph Diels stated that Goering knew how the fire was to be started, and General Franz Halder stated that he had heard Goering claim responsibility for the fire. On 30 June 1934, Ernst had just married, and was in Bremen on his way to Madeira to honeymoon with his new wife. SA Leader Ernst Roehm, whose inner circle included Ernst, had repeatedly called for a "second revolution" that would introduce socialism into the Reich and banish the old Conservative forces of business and government. Fearing the socialistic tendencies of the SA, along with Roehm's ambition to absorb the Reichswehr into the SA, conservative elements in the German Army and Kriegsmarine pressed for an elimination of SA power. Adolf Hitler-who had served as Ernst's best man at his wedding six weeks earlier-undertook a purge of the SA, an event known to history as the Night of the Long Knives. It lasted until July 2, 1934. Ernst was arrested in Bremerhaven together with his wife and his friend Martin Kirschbaum as he was about to get aboard a cruiser in order to travel to Madeira where he planned to spend his honeymoon. Later on he was handed over to an SS-commando unit led by Kurt Gildisch, flown back to Berlin and taken to the barracks of the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, where he was shot by a firing squad in the early evening of June 30. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. According to the official death list drawn up for internal-administrative use by the Gestapo he was one of fourteen people shot on the grounds of the Leibstandarte. September 1, 1874: #BOTD: Talaat Pasha (Talat Pasha), Vizir of the Ottoman Empire, chief architect of the Armenian Genocide, politician and convicted war criminal who served as the de facto leader of the Ottoman Empire from 1913 to 1918, chairman of the Union and Progress Party, which operated a one-party dictatorship in the Empire; Grand Vizier (Prime Minister) of the Empire during World War I, the main organizer and perpetrator of the Armenian genocide and other ethnic cleansings during his time as Minister of Interior Affairs (d. March 15, 1921) is #born Mehmed Talaat in Kircaali (Kardzhali), Adrianople (Edirne) Vilayet, Ottoman Empire (modern Bulgaria) into a middle-class family of Romani (Gypsie), Turkish, and Pomak (Bulgarian-speaking Muslims inhabiting northwestern Turkey, Bulgaria and northeastern Greece) descent. Mehmed Talaat grew up to despise Sultan Abdul Hamid II's autocracy. He was an early member of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), a secret revolutionary Young Turk organization, and over time became its leader. After the CUP succeeded in restoring the constitution and parliament in the 1908 Young Turk Revolution, Talaat was elected as a deputy from Adrianople to the Chamber of Deputies and later became Minister of the Interior. He played an important role in the downfall of Abdul Hamid the next year during the 31 March Incident by organizing a counter government. Multiple crises in the Empire including the 31 March Incident, attacks on Rumelian Muslims in the Balkan Wars, and the power struggle with the Freedom and Accord Party made Talaat and the Unionists disillusioned with multicultural Ottomanism and political pluralism, turning them into hard-line authoritarian Turkish nationalists. In 1913, Talaat and Ismail Enver carried out a coup d'etat with Mahmud Sevket Pasha as a reluctant partner. With the latter's assassination, an autocratic triumvirate of CUP Central Committee members lead the Ottoman Empire, consisting of Talaat, Enver, and Ahmed Cemal (known as the Three Pashas) of whom Talaat was its civilian leader. Talaat and Enver were influential bringing the Ottoman Empire into the First World War. During World War I, he ordered on 24 April 1915 the arrest and deportation of Armenian intellectuals in Constantinople (now Istanbul), most of them being ultimately murdered, and on 30 May 1915 requested the Temporary Law of Deportation; these events initiated the Armenian genocide. He is widely considered the main perpetrator of the genocide, and is thus held responsible for the death of around 1 million Armenians. In a move that established total Unionist control over the Ottoman government, Talaat Pasha became Grand Vizier in 1917, and introduced many social reforms. Talaat personally negotiated the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Bolsheviks, regaining parts of Eastern Anatolia which were occupied by Russia since 1878, and won the race to Baku on the Caucasus front. However breakthroughs by the Allies in the Macedonia and Palestine fronts meant defeat for the Ottomans and the downfall of the CUP. On the night of 2-3 November 1918, Talaat Pasha and other members of the CUP's central committee fled the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Special Military Tribunal convicted Talaat and sentenced him to death in absentia for subverting the constitution, profiteering from the war, and organizing massacres against Greeks and Armenians. Exiled in Berlin, he supported the Turkish Nationalists led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Ataturk) in Turkey's War of Independence. Talaat Pasha was duly assassinated and died in Berlin, Germany by a 23-year-old Armenian, Soghomon Tehlirian, a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, as part of Operation Nemesis. Operation Nemesis was a program to assassinate both Ottoman perpetrators of the Armenian genocide and officials of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic most responsible for the massacre of Armenians during the September Days of 1918 in Baku. Masterminded by Shahan Natalie, Armen Garo, and Aaron Sachaklian, it was named after the Greek goddess of divine retribution, Nemesis. Between 1920 and 1922, a clandestine cell of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation carried out seven killings, the best-known being the assassination of Talaat Pasha, the main orchestrator of the Armenian genocide. Initially, Talaat's friends hoped he could be buried in Anatolia, but neither the Ottoman government in Constantinople nor the Turkish nationalist movement in Ankara wanted the body; it would be a political liability to associate themselves with the man considered the worst criminal of World War I. Accordingly, he was buried in the Alter St.-Matthaus-Kirchhof (Old St. Matthew's Churchyard) in Schoneberg, Berlin in a well-attended ceremony on March 19. At 11:00 a.m., prayers led by the imam of the Turkish embassy, Sukri Bey, were held at Talaat's apartment. Afterwards, a large procession accompanied the coffin to the cemetery. Many prominent Germans paid their respects, including former foreign ministers Richard von Kuhlmann and Arthur Zimmermann, along with the former head of Deutsche Bank, the ex-director of the Baghdad railway, several military personnel who had served in the Ottoman Empire during the war and August von Platen-Hallermunde, attending on behalf of the exiled Kaiser Wilhelm II. The German foreign office sent a wreath with a ribbon saying, "To a great statesman and a faithful friend." Bahaeddin Sakir, a leading member of the secret Committee Of Union And Progress (CUP) that ruled the Ottoman Empire that committed the genocides against the Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian peoples as part of a broader policy of ethnic erasure during the late Ottoman period, read a funeral oration, barely able to maintain his composure, while the coffin was lowered into the grave, covered in an Ottoman flag. Sakir asserted the assassination was "the consequence of imperialist politics against the Islamic nations". In 1922, the Kemalist government rescinded Talaat's conviction as a war criminal during The Istanbul Trials Of 1919-1920, and then a house and a martyr's pension was granted to Talaat's family with a law passed by the Grand National Assembly in 1926. During World War II, at the request of the Prime Minister of Turkey, Sukru Saracoglu, Talaat's remains were disinterred from Germany and transported to Turkey, where he received a state funeral on February 25, 1943, attended by German ambassador Franz von Papen, Ahmet Emin Yalman, and Saracoglu. With this gesture, Adolf Hitler hoped to secure Turkish support for the Axis. Talaat's friend Huseyin Cahit (Yalcin) gave the funeral oration as he was buried at The Monument Of Liberty in the Sisli-Mecidiyekoy district of Istanbul, Turkey, originally dedicated to those who died during The 31 March Incident, an April 1909 counterrevolutionary uprising in the Ottoman Empire against the CUP. His return to Turkey was welcomed by Turkish society. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/the-armenian-genocide-documentary-mp4-video-download-dvd.html

September 1, 1854: #BOTD: #HBD! Engelbert Humperdinck, German playwright, composer and educator (d. 1921) is #born at Siegburg in the Rhine Province. After receiving piano lessons, he produced his first composition at the age of seven. His first attempts at works for the stage were two singspiele written when he was 13. His parents disapproved of his plans for a career in music and encouraged him to study architecture. Nevertheless, he began taking music classes under Ferdinand Hiller and Isidor Seiss at the Cologne Conservatory in 1872. In 1876, he won a scholarship that enabled him to go to Munich, where he studied with Franz Lachner and later with Josef Rheinberger. In 1879, he won the first Mendelssohn Award given by the Mendelssohn Stiftung (foundation) in Berlin. He went to Italy and became acquainted with Richard Wagner in Naples. Wagner invited him to join him in Bayreuth, and during 1880 and 1881 Humperdinck assisted in the production of Parsifal. He also served as music tutor to Wagner's son, Siegfried. After winning another prize, Humperdinck traveled through Italy, France, and Spain and spent two years teaching at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona. In 1887, he returned to Cologne. He was appointed professor at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt in 1890 and also teacher of harmony at Julius Stockhausen's Vocal School. By this time he had composed several works for chorus and a Humoreske for small orchestra, which enjoyed a vogue in Germany. He is best known for his opera Hansel and Gretel. He first composed four songs to accompany a puppet show his nieces were giving at home. Then, using a libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette rather loosely based on the version of the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, he composed a singspiel of 16 songs with piano accompaniment and connecting dialogue. By January 1891 he had begun working on a complete orchestration. The opera premiered in Weimar on 23 December 1893, under the baton of Richard Strauss. With its highly original synthesis of Wagnerian techniques and traditional German folk songs, Hansel and Gretel was an instant and overwhelming success. Hansel and Gretel has always been Humperdinck's most popular work. In 1923 the Royal Opera House (London) chose it for their first complete radio opera broadcast. Eight years later, it was the first opera transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Engelbert Humperdinck died of a heart attack at the age of 67 in Berlin, Germany. He is buried at the Sudwestkirchhof in Stahnsdorf near Berlin. The Berlin State Opera performed Hansel and Gretel in his memory a few weeks later. September 1-2, 1864: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): The Eastern Theater Of The American Civil War: The Atlanta Campaign: The Battle Of Jonesborough: -- Due to the Union success at The Battle Of Jonesborough (modern name Jonesboro) led by General William T. Sherman, who had launched an assault on Atlanta, the Confederate Army General John Bell Hood orders the evacuation of Atlanta, ending a four-month siege by General Sherman. Two Union armies, the Army Of The Tennessee and the Army of the Cumberland, led by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, maneuvered to draw the Army of Tennessee (led by John Bell Hood) away from their defenses at Atlanta, Georgia, where it could be destroyed. Although Hood's army was not destroyed, the city of Atlanta was abandoned and then occupied by Union troops for the rest of the war, resulting in The Fall Of Atlanta, which had far-reaching political as well as military effects on the course of the war. The Battle Of Atlanta was a battle of the Atlanta Campaign fought during the American Civil War on July 22, 1864, just southeast of Atlanta, Georgia. Continuing their summer campaign to seize the important rail and supply center of Atlanta, Union forces commanded by William Tecumseh Sherman overwhelmed and defeated Confederate forces defending the city under John Bell Hood. Union Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson was killed during the battle. Despite the implication of finality in its name, the battle occurred midway through the campaign, and the city did not fall until September 2, 1864, after a Union siege and various attempts to seize railroads and supply lines leading to Atlanta. After taking the city, Sherman's troops headed south-southeastward toward Milledgeville, the state capital, and on to Savannah with the March to the Sea. September 1, 1878: #BOTD: J. F. C. Fuller, nicknamed "Boney", senior British Army officer, military historian, strategist, fascist and occultist, notable as an early theorist of modern armoured warfare, including categorizing principles of warfare, nazi sympathizer and apologist (d. February 10, 1966) is #born John Frederick Charles Fuller in Chichester, West Sussex, the son of an Anglican clergyman. With 45 books and many articles, Major-General John Frederick Charles Fuller CB (The Most Honourable Order Of The Bath, of which a ceremonial bath was an elecment of initiation) CBE (Commander Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire) DSO (Distinguished Service Order) was a highly prolific author whose ideas reached army officers and the interested public. He explored the business of fighting, in terms of the relationship between warfare and social, political, and economic factors in the civilian sector. Fuller emphasized the potential of new weapons, especially tanks and aircraft, to stun a surprised enemy psychologically. Fuller was highly controversial in British politics because of his support for the organized fascist movement. He was also an occultist and Thelemite who wrote a number of works on esotericism and mysticism. On April 20, 1939 Fuller was an honoured guest at Hitler's 50th birthday parade, watching as "for three hours a completely mechanised and motorised army roared past the Fuhrer." Afterwards Hitler asked, "I hope you were pleased with your children?" Fuller replied, "Your Excellency, they have grown up so quickly that I no longer recognise them." During the Second World War, 1939-1945, Fuller was under suspicion for his Nazi sympathies. He continued to speak out in favour of a peaceful settlement with Germany. Alan Brooke (in his war diaries, p. 201) comments that "the Director of Security called on him to discuss Boney Fuller and his Nazi activities", but Brooke commented that he did not think Fuller "had any unpatriotic intentions". Although he was not interned or arrested, he was the only officer of his rank not invited to return to service during the war. There was some suspicion that he was not incarcerated in May 1940 along with other leading officials of the BUF because of his association with General Edmund Ironside and other senior officers. Mosley himself admitted to "a little puzzlement" as to why Fuller had not been imprisoned. Fuller spent his last years believing that the wrong side had won the Second World War. He most fully announced that thesis in the 1961 edition of The Reformation of War. There, he announced his belief that Hitler was the saviour of the West against the Soviet Union and denounced Churchill and Roosevelt for being too stupid to see so : / . J. F. C. Fuller died aged 87 in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. His burial place is not publicly disclosed. January 8, 2007) is #born Margaret Yvonne Kao Middleton at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A brunette with blue-grey eyes, she became an internationally famous Hollywood film star in the 1940s and 1950s, made several recordings, and later acted on television and stage. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, De Carlo was raised in the home of her Presbyterian maternal grandparents. Her mother enrolled her in a local dance school when she was three. By the early 1940s, she and her mother had moved to Los Angeles, where De Carlo participated in beauty contests and worked as a dancer in nightclubs. She began working in motion pictures in 1941, in short subjects. She sang "The Lamp of Memory" in a three-minute Soundies musical, and worked briefly at Columbia Pictures. In 1942, she signed a three-year contract with Paramount Pictures, where she was given uncredited bit parts in important films and was intended to replace Dorothy Lamour. Her first lead was for independent producer E.B. Derr in the James Fenimore Cooper adventure Deerslayer (1943, ultimately released by Republic Pictures). She obtained her breakthrough role in Salome, Where She Danced (1945), a Universal Pictures release produced by Walter Wanger, who described her as "the most beautiful girl in the world." The film's publicity and success turned her into a star, and she signed a five-year contract with Universal. From then on, Universal starred her in its lavish Technicolor productions, such as Frontier Gal (1945), Song of Scheherazade (1947), and Slave Girl (1947). Cameramen voted her "Queen of Technicolor" three years in a row. Tired of being typecast as exotic women, she made her first serious dramatic performances in two film noirs, Brute Force (1947) and Criss Cross (1949). The first American film star to visit Israel, De Carlo received further recognition as an actress for her work in the British comedies Hotel Sahara (1951) and The Captain's Paradise (1953). Her career reached its peak when eminent producer-director Cecil B. DeMille cast her as Moses' Midianite wife, Sephora, her most prominent role, in his biblical epic The Ten Commandments (1956), which was immensely successful at the box office and remains an annual tradition on television. Her success continued with starring roles in Flame of the Islands (1956), Death of a Scoundrel (1956), Band of Angels (1957), and The Sword and the Cross (1958), in which she portrayed Mary Magdalene. She also accepted supporting roles in McLintock! (1963) and A Global Affair (1964). She gained a new generation of fans as a star of the CBS sitcom The Munsters (1964-1966), playing Herman Munster's glamorous vampire wife, Lily, a role she reprised in the feature film Munster, Go Home! (1966) and the television film The Munsters' Revenge (1981). In 1971, she played Carlotta Campion and introduced the popular song "I'm Still Here" in the Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim musical Follies. Yvonne, her best-selling autobiography, was published in 1987. A stroke survivor, De Carlo died of heart failure aged 84 at The Motion Picture And Television Fund's home in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California. Her remains were cremated; the final disposition of her ashes are not publcly disclosed other than that they were given to family or friend(s). September 1: Chronology: Calendars: The Months Of The Year: -- September begins, ninth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the latter being the most widely used calendar in the world.. September succeeds August and precedes November. In the Northern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological autumn is on September 1; in the Southern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological spring is the same date. The month was named September in Latin because it was the 7th month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, with March being the first month of the year. About 700 BC, it became the ninth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added one day when he created the Julian calendar in 46 BC, giving it its modern length of 30 days. Ancient Roman observances for September include Ludi Romani, originally celebrated from September 12 to September 14, later extended to September 5 to September 19. In the 1st century BC, an extra day was added in honor of the deified Julius Caesar on 4 September. Epulum Jovis was held on September 13. Ludi Triumphales was held from September 18-22. The Septimontium was celebrated in September, and on December 11 on later calendars. These dates do not correspond to the modern Gregorian calendar. September was called the "harvest month" in Charlemagne's calendar. September corresponds partly to the Fructidor and partly to the Vendemiaire of The First French Republic. September is called Herbstmonat, "Harvest Month", in Switzerland. The Anglo-Saxons called the month Gerstmonath, "Barley Month", that crop being then usually harvested. In 1752, the British Empire adopted the Gregorian calendar. In the British Empire that year, September 2 was immediately followed by September 14. On Usenet, it is said that September 1993 marked The Eternal September or The September That Never Ended, a cultural phenomenon when Internet service providers began offering Usenet access to many new users which swamped the existing culture of those forums and their ability to self-moderate and enforce existing norms; prior to this, the only sudden changes in the volume of new users of Usenet occurred each September, when cohorts of university students would gain access to it for the first time, in sync with the academic calendar. In the United States, September is one of the most common birth months (third most popular after August and July, which both have 31 days), as all but one Top 10 most common birthdays are in September, based on the National Center for Health Statistics statistics on births between 1994 and 2014. The most common birthday is September 9 (#1), least common is September 1 (#250). The September Equinox takes place in this month, and certain observances are organized around it. It is the Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Vernal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. The dates can vary from September 21 to September 24 (UTC). August's birthstones is the sapphire. The birth flowers are the Forget-Me-Not, Morning Glory and Aster. The Western zodiac signs are Virgo (until September 22) and Libra (September 23 onward). https://store.earthstation1.com/the-historical-view-a-legacy-in-pictures-jpg-photo-cd.html

September 1: Uzbekistan Independence Day: -- A celebration of their independence from the Soviet Union. Uzbekistan, also known as the Republic of Uzbekistan, is a double landlocked country in Central Asia whose largest city, Tashkent, is its capital. The country shares its borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. It is a secular state with a presidential constitutional government and a population of about 35.3 million. So far, the Uzbekistan environment has suffered greatly from Soviet policies to rapidly increase cotton production without proper environmental studies. Uzbekistan is a country with a history that spans a few thousand years, divided into three parts: before the U.S.S.R., during the U.S.S.R., and after the U.S.S.R. History books can trace the country's influence back to the first century B.C. when it was part of the silk route that connected China with the Middle East. The seventh and eighth centuries witnessed the Arab conquest of the area. Persian and Turkish influence spread in the following centuries, but by the 19th century, the independent Uzbek states of Bukhara, Kokand, and Samarkand rose. By then, however, the major religion of the area was Islam. The Russian conquest began in the 1860s and lasted until 1990. Russia had conquered Tashkent and absorbed vast swaths of Central Asia by the 1870s. The Bolsheviks started to gradually conquer Turkestan, Bukhara, and Khiva by the start of 1917, lasting until 1920. 1918 to 1922 saw the secularization campaign led by the communist rulers. A reorganization of Soviet states resulted in the creation of Uzbekistan and its neighboring countries by 1924. Conflicts with minority ethnic groups became common during this period. The year 1989 saw the rise of Islam Karimov as the leader of the Uzbek Communist Party. By 1991, he was able to declare Uzbekistan independence and have his country join the commonwealth of independent states. After independence, the country faced threats from Islamic terrorists and the civil unrest of 2004. The political and ecological crisis still haunts the country, yet despite all odds, they've survived, showing the spirit of Central Asia. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-second-russian-revolution-6-dvd-set-complete-tv-serie6.html

September 1, 1981: #DOTD: Albert Speer, German architect and author who was, for most of World War II, Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production for Nazi Germany (b. March 19, 1905) #dies of a stroke while on a visit to London, aged 76. He is buried at The Bergfriedhof Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. Albert Speer was born Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert Speer in Mannheim, Grand Duchy of Baden, German Empire into an upper-middle-class family. Albert Speer was Adolf Hitler's chief architect before assuming ministerial office. As "the Nazi who said sorry", he accepted moral responsibility at the Nuremberg trials and in his memoirs for complicity in crimes of the Nazi regime, while insisting he had been ignorant of the Holocaust. Speer joined the Nazi Party in 1931, launching himself on a political and governmental career which lasted fourteen years. His architectural skills made him increasingly prominent within the Party and he became a member of Hitler's inner circle. Hitler instructed him to design and construct structures including the Reich Chancellery and the Zeppelinfeld stadium in Nuremberg where Party rallies were held. Speer also made plans to reconstruct Berlin on a grand scale, with huge buildings, wide boulevards, and a reorganized transportation system. In February 1942, Hitler appointed him as Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production. After the war, he was tried at Nuremberg and sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the Nazi regime, principally for the use of forced labor. Despite repeated attempts to gain early release, he served his full sentence, most of it at Spandau Prison in West Berlin. Following his release in 1966, Speer published two bestselling autobiographical works, Inside the Third Reich and Spandau: The Secret Diaries, detailing his close personal relationship with Hitler, and providing readers and historians with a unique perspective on the workings of the Nazi regime. He wrote a third book, Infiltration, about the SS. https://store.earthstation1.com/art-in-the-third-reich-dvd-2-part-tv-documentary-serie2.html

September 1, 1715: #DOTD: #RIP Louis XIV (Louis Dieudonne), known as Louis The Great (Louis Le Grand) or the Sun King (Roi Soleil), monarch of the House of Bourbon who reigned as King of France from 1643 until his death (b. September 5, 1638) #dies of gangrene at Versailles, four days before his 77th birthday, after 72 years on the throne. Enduring much pain in his last days, he finally "yielded up his soul without any effort, like a candle going out", while reciting the psalm Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina (O Lord, make haste to help me). His body was laid to rest in Saint-Denis Basilica outside Paris. It remained there undisturbed for about 80 years until revolutionaries exhumed and destroyed all of the remains found in the Basilica. Louis XIV was born Louis Dieudonne in the Chateau de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a former royal palace in the commune of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, departement of Yvelines, about 19 km west of Paris, France, which today houses the Musee d'Archeologie Nationale (National Museum of Archaeology). Starting at the age of 4, his reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country in European history. In the age of absolutism in Europe, Louis XIV's France was a leader in the growing centralization of power. Louis began his personal rule of France in 1661, after the death of his chief minister, the Italian Cardinal Mazarin. An adherent of the concept of the divine right of kings, which advocates the divine origin of monarchical rule, Louis continued his predecessors' work of creating a centralized state governed from the capital. He sought to eliminate the remnants of feudalism persisting in parts of France and, by compelling many members of the nobility to inhabit his lavish Palace of Versailles, succeeded in pacifying the aristocracy, many members of which had participated in the Fronde rebellion during Louis' minority. By these means he became one of the most powerful French monarchs and consolidated a system of absolute monarchical rule in France that endured until the French Revolution. Louis encouraged and benefited from the work of prominent political, military, and cultural figures such as Mazarin, Colbert, Louvois, the Grand Conde, Turenne, Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Andre Charles Boulle, Moliere, Racine, Boileau, La Fontaine, Lully, Marais, Le Brun, Rigaud, Bossuet, Le Vau, Mansart, Charles, Claude Perrault, and Le Notre. Under his rule, the Edict of Nantes, which granted rights to Huguenots, was abolished. The revocation effectively forced Huguenots to emigrate or convert in a wave of dragonnades, which managed to virtually destroy the French Protestant minority. During Louis' reign, France was the leading European power, and it fought three major wars: the Franco-Dutch War, the War of the League of Augsburg, and the War of the Spanish Succession. There were also two lesser conflicts: the War of Devolution and the War of the Reunions. Warfare defined the foreign policy of Louis XIV, and his personality shaped his approach. Impelled "by a mix of commerce, revenge, and pique", Louis sensed that warfare was the ideal way to enhance his glory. In peacetime he concentrated on preparing for the next war. He taught his diplomats that their job was to create tactical and strategic advantages for the French military. https://store.earthstation1.com/triumph-of-the-west-tv-series-5-dual-layer-dvds-all-13-sh513.html

September 1, 1969: 20th Century Revolutions: The Cold War: The Cold War (1962-1979): The Arab Cold War (July 23, 1952 - February 11, 1979): Arab Nationalist Rebellions: The 1969 Libyan Revolution (The Al-Fateh Revolution, The 1 September Revolution,The 1969 Libyan Coup d'Etat): -- The 1969 Libyan Coup d'Etat is carried out by the Free Unionist Officers Movement, a group of about 70 young army officers led by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, and enlisted men mostly assigned to the Signal Corps gain control of the government and overthrow Libya's King Idris I, religio-political leader Idris Of Libya. The Free Officers Movement, which claimed credit for carrying out the coup, headed by a twelve-member directorate that designated itself the Revolutionary Command Council (RCC), constituted the Libyan government after the coup. The next day. the RCC promoted Captain Gaddafi to colonel and appointed him commander-in-chief of the Libyan Armed Forces. Although RCC spokesmen declined until January 1970 to reveal any other names of RCC members, it was apparent from that date onward that the head of the RCC and new de facto head of state was Gaddafi. The coup was launched at Benghazi, and was completed within two hours. Army units quickly rallied in support of the coup and, within a few days, military control was established in Tripoli and elsewhere throughout the country. Popular reception of the coup, especially by younger people in the urban areas, was enthusiastic. Fears of resistance in Cyrenaica and Fezzan proved unfounded. No deaths or violent incidents related to the coup were reported. In its initial proclamation on 1 September, the RCC declared the country to be a free and sovereign state called the Libyan Arab Republic, which would proceed "in the path of freedom, unity, and social justice, guaranteeing the right of equality to its citizens, and opening before them the doors of honourable work." The RCC advised diplomatic representatives in Libya that the revolutionary changes had not been directed from outside the country, that existing treaties and agreements would remain in effect, and that foreign lives and property would be protected. Diplomatic recognition of the new government came quickly from countries throughout the world. United States recognition was officially extended on 6 September. The rule of the Turks and Italians and the "reactionary" government which were overthrown were characterised as belonging to "dark ages", from which the Libyan people were called to move forward as "free brothers" to a new age of prosperity, equality, and honour. As the RCC in the last months of 1969 moved to institute domestic reforms, it proclaimed neutrality in the confrontation between the superpowers and opposition to all forms of colonialism and imperialism. It also made clear Libya's dedication to Arab unity and to the support of the Palestinian cause against Israel. The RCC reaffirmed the country's identity as part of the "Arab Nation" and its state religion as Islam. Parliamentary institutions from the kingdom were dissolved with legislative functions being assumed by the RCC, and the prohibition against political parties was continued, in effect from 1952. The new government categorically rejected communism - in large part because it was atheist - and officially espoused an Arab interpretation of socialism that integrated Islamic principles with social, economic, and political reform. The discovery of significant oil reserves in 1959 and the subsequent income from petroleum sales enabled the Kingdom of Libya to transition from one of the world's poorest nations to a wealthy state. Although oil drastically improved the Libyan government's finances, resentment began to build over the increased concentration of the nation's wealth in the hands of King Idris. This discontent mounted with the rise of Nasserism and Arab nationalism/socialism throughout the Arab world. https://store.earthstation1.com/clive-james39-fame-in-the-20th-century-tv-series-dvd-set-mp4-usb-39204.html

September 1, 1990: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War (1985-1991) (The End Of The Cold War): The Gulf War (The Persian Gulf War, Gulf War I): The Invasion Of Kuwait: -- Iraq allows 700 Western "guests" (actually hostages, or "human shields" as they were called at the time), held hostage since the invasion, to leave Iraq. This came one week after Saddam Hussein appeared on Iraqi state television with a number of these Western "guests" to try to prevent the Gulf War, a propaganda performance that backfired and served instead to raise worldwide support for these hostages. In that staged event, Saddam told the group of more than a dozen mainly British people they had been detained to prevent war, said Iraq wanted to see that they were safe, and that they would become heroes of peace. The Iraqi leader told them they were not being held as "human shields" saying Iraq was in a position to destroy any attacker. Saddam singled out one young British boy identified only as "Stuart" and ruffled the child's hair. Speaking through an interpreter, he asked Stuart if he was getting his milk. The detainees, who looked strained and nervous, were promised tuition for their children and given permission to write to their families. At the end of the 30-minute taped appearance, the Iraqi leader posed for photographs with the hostages before shaking each one by the hand. A spokesman for the Gulf Support Group, set up by relatives of stranded Britons, said the interview "made all of us feel sick". The British Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd, also criticised the broadcast. Mr Hurd said: "I think the manipulation of children in that sort of way is contemptible." The TV appearance was also condemned by the US. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-gulf-crisis-the-road-to-war-tv-documentary-series-dvd-mp4-us4.html

September 1, 2016: #DOTD: #RIP: Fred Hellerman, American folk singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer, an original member of the seminal American folk group The Weavers, together with Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, and Ronnie Gilbert (b. May 13, 1927) #dies "after a long run of failing health" at his home in Weston, Connecticut, at the age of 89, the last surviving original member of the Weavers. His burial details are unknown. Fred Hellerman was born in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish parents. He produced the record album Alice's Restaurant (1967) for Arlo Guthrie, played accompaniment guitar on scores of folk albums, and wrote a number of folk and protest songs. Hellerman was the youngest of three children. His father, Harry, was an immigrant from Riga, Latvia and mother, Clara (nee Robinson), was born in the United States to immigrants from Riga. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949 at Brooklyn College. In 1948, Hellerman formed the Weavers with Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, and Lee Hays. Hellerman wrote and co-wrote some of their hits. He also wrote under the aliases Fred Brooks and Bob Hill. Because of his involvement with left-wing groups during the 1930s and 1940s, Hellerman came under suspicion of Communist sympathies during the McCarthy era. In 1950, Hellerman was named, along with the rest of the Weavers, in the anti-communist tract Red Channels and was placed on the industry blacklist. In February 1952, an FBI informant testified that the Weavers were members of the Communist party. The group, unable to perform on television, radio, or in most music halls, broke up in 1952, but resumed singing in 1955. They continued together until 1963 (with changes in personnel). He also played on Joan Baez's eponymous first album in 1960. The Weavers held several reunion concerts in 1980, shortly before Hays' death, which were documented in the film The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time! (1982). Hellermen, writing under the name of Fred Brooks, arranged "Green Grow the Lilacs" on Harry Belafonte's 1959 album, Love is a Gentle Thing. The song was based on a traditional song of Irish origin that was widely sung in the US in the 19th century with different lyrics. Hellerman wrote two original verses and adapted the chorus. Hellerman married the writer Susan Lardner, the daughter of John Lardner, in 1970. The Hellermans had two children, Caleb and Simeon. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-weavers-wasn39t-that-a-time-dvd-1981-docum391981.html

September 1, 1982: #DOTD: Wladyslaw Gomulka, Polish communist politician, de facto leader of post-war Poland from 1947 until 1948, leader again in 1956 following the Polish October until 1970 (b. February 6, 1905) #dies at the age of 77 of lung cancer caused by being a heavy smoker. Gomulka's memoirs were not published until 1994, long after his death, and five years after the collapse of the communist regime which he served and led. Gomulka is buried at Powazki Military Cemetery in Warsaw. Wladyslaw Gomulka was #born in Bialobrzegi Franciszkanskie village on the outskirts of Krosno, into a worker's family living in the Austrian Partition (the Galicia region), Austria-Hungary (now Poland). His parents had met and married in the United States, where each had immigrated to in search of work in the late 19th century, but returned to occupied Poland in the early 20th century because Wladyslaw's father Jan was unable to find gainful employment in America. Gomulka was initially very popular for his reforms; his seeking a "Polish way to socialism"; and giving rise to the period known as "Polish Thaw". During the 1960s, however, he became more rigid and authoritarian; afraid of destabilizing the system, he was not inclined to introduce or permit changes. In the 1960s he supported the persecution of the Catholic Church, intellectuals and the anti-communist opposition. In 1967 to 1968, Gomulka allowed outbursts of anti-Zionist and antisemitic political campaign, pursued primarily by others in the Party, but utilized by Gomulka to retain power by shifting the attention from the stagnating economy. Many of the remaining Polish Jews left the country. At that time he was also responsible for persecuting protesting students and toughening censorship of the media. Gomulka supported Poland's participation in the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. In the treaty with West Germany, signed in December 1970 at the end of Gomulka's period in office, West Germany recognized the post-World War II borders, which established a foundation for future peace, stability and cooperation in Central Europe. In the same month, economic difficulties led to price rises and subsequent bloody clashes with shipyard workers on the Baltic coast, in which several dozen workers were fatally shot. The tragic events forced Gomulka's resignation and retirement. In a generational replacement of the ruling elite, Edward Gierek took over the Party leadership and tensions eased. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-struggles-for-poland-dvd-set-all-9-shows-5-dis95.html

September 1, 1977: #DOTD: #RIP: Ethel Waters, African American singer and actress who frequently performed jazz, swing, and pop music on the Broadway stage and in concerts, second African American to be nominated for an Academy Award, television pioneer as first African American to star on her own television show (The Ethel Waters Show (1939, one of the earlist television shows) and the first African American woman to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award (Route 66, "Goodnight Sweet Blues", 1962) (b. October 31, 1896) #dies aged 80 from uterine cancer, kidney failure, and other ailments, in Chatsworth, California. She is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. "Ethel", a one-woman tribute to Waters written and performed by Terry Burrell, ran as a limited engagement in February and March 2012. Ethel Waters was born in Chester, Pennsylvania as a result of the rape of her teenaged African American mother, Louise Anderson (1881-1962), by 17-year-old John Wesley (or Wesley John) Waters (1878-1901), a pianist and family acquaintance from a middle-class African American background. Waters' family was very fair-skinned, his mother in particular. Many sources, including Ethel herself, reported for years that her mother was 12 or 13 years old at the time of the rape, 13 when Ethel was born. Stephen Bourne opens his 2007 biography, Ethel Waters: Stormy Weather, with the statement that genealogical research has shown that Louise Anderson may have been 15 or 16 years old. Waters played no role in raising his daughter. Soon after she was born, her mother married Norman Howard, a railroad worker, with whom she had a daughter, Juanita Howard, Ethel's half-sister. Ethel used the surname Howard as a child and then reverted to using the surname Waters. She was raised in poverty by Sally Anderson, her grandmother, who worked as a housemaid, and with two of her aunts and an uncle. Waters never lived in the same place for more than 15 months. Of her difficult childhood, she said "I never was a child. I never was cuddled, liked, or understood by my family." Ethel Waters began her career in the 1920s singing blues. Her notable recordings include "Dinah", "Stormy Weather", "Taking a Chance on Love", "Heat Wave", "Supper Time", "Am I Blue?", "Cabin in the Sky", "I'm Coming Virginia", and her version of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow". https://store.earthstation1.com/duke-ellington-radio-shows-jazz-amp-swing-mp3-cd-download-usb-driv3.html
